SPRING HAS SPRUNG ON DEER LAKE?
Hello Friends of Deer lake.
It is Friday May 1 and as I look outside I can see snow falling!! Not kidding!!
I guess my suntan lotion will be put on hold as it is 4 degrees Celsius and I am wondering why I put my snow shovel and snowmobiles away!! With what is going on in this crazy world right now I guess this is only a mild irritant as it will warm up eventually. ( I hope)
My pontoon boat has had its spring check up and after replacing the water pump looks like we are ready for those hot summer days, which surely must be around the corner. Thanks to one of my neighbours my runaway dock is safely tied to a beach awaiting recovery. Can’t rescue the dock without the boat in the water yet I can’t “park” the boat without the dock!!
Never a dull moment on Deer Lake.
Please mark on your calendar our 7th Annual FODL AGM and BBQ on Labour Day Saturday September 5 2026.
We have an expert coming in from EcoEthic Inc to discuss and explain how a septic system works and the dangers to Deer lake if it isn’t operating properly. I would like to thank Mr. Patrick O’Neill a VP of the Eagle Lake Conservation Association for putting me in contact with Rob Davis from EcoEthic . This is just another example of cooperation between lake associations to maintain the beauty of our region. In addition to our guest speaker we will have the musical talents of Darcy Windover to help our party atmosphere. We can all have fun while we learn. Food and free refreshments supplied as usual
Please read the “ Bearwise Bulletins” posted on FACEBOOK and the FODL website. This possible life saving information was provided by Brandon Hellyer the Ministry of Natural Resources wildlife Technician. Sadly there have been numerous reports of some Deer Lake residences feeding our bears without realizing the consequence of their actions. This not only puts our pets, children and unsuspecting residents in danger it also places the bear in a bad situation. If it loses the natural fear of human beings the Ministry would have to euthanize the animal . Please use common sense.
Finally we are trying to get “animal proof” garbage containers placed at the Pyke Road boat ramp and the Deer lake swimming hole. We are still waiting for the Ministry of Environment to give us permission to place these bins on their property so I will keep everyone updated. If it happens, your FODL committee will be looking for active volunteers to keep these bins available for residents and guests to use as needed. Hopefully this will stop trash from ending up on the roadside, the lake or the forest.
Enjoy the Victoria Day weekend everyone; back to you soon.
