Hello Fellow Deer lakers:
It’s hard to believe but the “dog days of summer” are technically coming to an end!! Apparently, they run from July 3 to August 11 every year.
Dating back to Roman and Greek empires the phrase was based on the star Sirius or “Dog Star” which literally translates to “scorching”. The “dog star” coincides with what is now those dates between July and August, the hottest time of year. It was first translated to English in 1530, still being associated with the Dog Star and hot weather. Apparently as time passed it has lost its astronomical connection replaced by the link to the hottest days of summer. Low energy during the most humid weeks of the year makes us all a little sluggish much like a lazy dog!! Sorry Ollie!! (My Black Lab) Who knew!!
However, for your Friends of Deer lake (FODL) committee this is the time of great anticipation to our annual FODL AGM and BBQ. on Saturday, Sept 5 from 12pm – to 4pm.
Hard to believe but this is our 7th Annual event. We have a professional singer this year Darcy Windover to entertain us and Mr. Rob Davis from EcoEthic to explain how our septic system works and how to maintain something so essential to the health of Deer Lake. Most of us really don’t understand the “ in’s and outs” of our septic field and here is an excellent forum to learn from an expert.
We will have prizes including 4 Blue Jays tickets to give away along with our very popular 50/50 draw and other assorted prizes and giveaways. Also, this year we have our new Navy Blue FODL T shirts and they will be available for sale as you check in with Cindy or Sharon. All proceeds go into the FODL coffers to be used where our members see fit. Beverages, hot dogs, hamburgers will also be provided for our members and friends enjoyment. EVERYONE IS INVITED and it’s free!!
Soon I will be reaching out to each one of you to determine attendance numbers. We do this so we know how many dogs and burg’s we have to purchase.
Once again this will be held at Pete Benninger’s humble abode(Summer Road) RAIN OR SHINE!! Remember if the weather doesn’t cooperate, we can move inside quite comfortably.
Please try and attend. It’s important to your neighbours, the FODL Committee but also to the health and well being of Deer lake and surrounding area.
Watch your “in box” for my email!!
